Vaccination schedules don't end after childhood — several vaccines are specifically recommended at defined points throughout adult life, and understanding the logic behind each one helps make sense of a schedule that's easy to lose track of.

Vaccination is often thought of as something that mostly happens in childhood, but immunity from some childhood vaccines wanes over time, certain infections become more dangerous with age, and some vaccines are specifically designed for and only recommended during adulthood — which means the vaccination conversation genuinely doesn't end once someone finishes their childhood schedule.

How Vaccines Actually Work

Vaccines work by exposing the immune system to a harmless version, component, or genetic blueprint of a pathogen, prompting the body to produce antibodies and generate immune "memory" cells without causing the actual disease. If the real pathogen is encountered later, this pre-trained immune response can recognize and neutralize it far more quickly than an immune system encountering it for the first time — often preventing infection entirely, or at minimum substantially reducing severity. Different vaccine technologies (inactivated, live-attenuated, mRNA, protein subunit) achieve this through different mechanisms, but the underlying principle of training immune memory in advance is shared across all of them.

Routine Adult Vaccinations Worth Knowing About

The tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis booster (Tdap or Td) is generally recommended every ten years in adulthood, since immunity from childhood vaccination wanes over time and tetanus, in particular, remains a genuine risk from wound contamination regardless of age. Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for essentially all adults, since flu strains change from year to year and immunity from a previous year's vaccine or infection doesn't reliably protect against the current season's circulating strains. The pneumococcal vaccine, protecting against a common bacterial cause of pneumonia and other serious infections, is specifically recommended for adults over 65 and for younger adults with certain chronic health conditions that increase infection risk. Shingles (herpes zoster) vaccination is recommended for older adults, since the virus that causes chickenpox in childhood remains dormant in the nervous system for life and can reactivate later, particularly as immune function naturally declines with age.
