Sleep deprivation has some of the most consistently documented negative effects on immune function of any modifiable lifestyle factor. Studies have shown that people sleeping less than six hours a night have measurably reduced antibody response following vaccination and are significantly more likely to catch a common cold after controlled viral exposure compared to those sleeping seven or more hours. Brief, acute stress can actually enhance certain immediate immune responses — an evolutionary adaptation that made sense when short-term stress usually meant facing an immediate physical threat with a real risk of injury and infection. Chronic, sustained stress does the opposite: it maintains persistently elevated cortisol, which suppresses immune function over time, measurably reducing resistance to infection, slowing wound healing, and blunting vaccine response.
