Even mild dehydration, defined as a fluid loss of just 1 to 2% of body weight, measurably impairs cognitive performance and physical function, which is a smaller deficit than most people assume is needed to notice an effect.

The commonly cited "eight glasses a day" guideline is a rough, easy-to-remember approximation rather than a figure derived from rigorous individual-level science, and actual fluid needs vary considerably based on body size, activity level, climate, and diet. Importantly, total fluid intake isn't limited to plain water — food contributes a meaningful portion of daily fluid intake (fruits and vegetables in particular can be 80-95% water by weight), and other beverages count toward hydration as well, despite some persistent myths that caffeinated drinks don't. Rather than rigidly tracking glasses, most current guidance favors using urine color and thirst as more individually responsive indicators of hydration status.
Reading the Body's Own Hydration Signals
Pale yellow urine generally indicates adequate hydration, while noticeably dark yellow or amber urine is a fairly reliable sign that more fluid is needed — this simple visual check is more responsive to an individual's actual, moment-to-moment hydration status than any fixed daily volume target could be. Thirst itself is a legitimate and useful signal for most healthy adults, contrary to the sometimes-repeated claim that "if you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated" — this specific claim significantly overstates the situation for most everyday circumstances, though thirst perception does become somewhat less reliable in older adults, which is a genuine factor behind their higher dehydration risk.
