Topical gels, applied daily to the skin, offer relatively steady hormone levels but carry a risk of transferring the medication to others through skin contact if precautions aren't followed. Injectable forms, given anywhere from weekly to every few months depending on the specific formulation, avoid that transfer risk but can produce more noticeable peaks and troughs in hormone levels between doses, particularly with shorter-acting formulations. Pellets implanted under the skin provide a slow, extended release over several months, while patches and other less common delivery methods exist as further alternatives.
